David Ayer stumbles badly with his latest LA gangster flick.The Tax Collectoris violent and gruesome as hell, but poorly written with an absurd plot. The characters behave nonsensically in a world of obvious betrayals. Ayer also tries to incorporate religious and familial themes. Whilesuperheroesare typically revered as beacons of inspiration and hold many admirable qualities, a closer look often reveals a diverse spectrum of personalities among them. Contrary to the idealized image, some superheroes are characterized by traits that make themdistinctly unlikeable protagonists. This can especially be the case in their movie adaptations, where there’s often not the scope to delve into the deep character development that’s present in the source material. From arrogance and rudeness to obnoxious behavior, or being one-dimensional to even outright annoying, these flaws serve as a reminder that superheroes, like any character, can encompass a range of human traits....

In our oversaturated streaming world of today, books remain key source materials for television and film adaptations. They come with characters, stories, and worlds already established; all the filmmakers need to do is translate them to the screen. But, of course, we never really know what we will get with these adaptations. They might literally translate the source material, page by page and scene by scene. Other works might use the source material as a general guide, using it to tell anew and different story....
