Star Trek: Picarddid more than simply bring back the original crew of U.S.S. Enterprise-D… it became one of the most memorable moments in all ofStar Trek’sstoried history. Clearly, the third season of the hit Paramount+ streaming series will go down as one of Trekkies’ favorite storylines ever brought to life, but Patrick Stewart may not be done playing Jean-Luc Picard quite yet. During an interview in a recent sit-down, Stewart told host Josh Horowitz that a script for aStar Trekmovie is being developed specifically with the one-time Enterprise captain in mind. Stewart said during his appearance on theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast:
“I heard only last night about a script that is being written, but written specifically with the actor Patrick to play in it, and I’ve been told to expect to receive it within a week or so. And I’m so excited because it sounds like the kind of project where the experimentation that I want to do will be essential for this kind of material. It’s good at 83.”
Stewart continued:
“After we finished recording our seven seasons of Next Generation, we made four movies, one after the other. Star Trek movies of varying qualities, the best one being the one directed by Jonathan Frakes [First Contact], who was one of the people who had the most influence on me, on the show, because of his experience and his understanding of the complexities — and how bringing different qualities on to the stage floor was very, very important. Diversity, you know, and change. So, it’s an ongoing procedure for me.”

Jean-Luc Picard’s Journey Continues
After playing the venerable captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D in the television seriesStar Trek: The Next Generationfor seven seasons,Patrick Stewartand his fellowTNGcastmates embarked onto the big screen in the critically pannedStar Trek: Generations, which includedthe death of Captain James T. Kirk.
Three sequels followed, but it wasn’t until the streaming seriesPicardcame along in 2020 that Trekkies were afforded the opportunity to truly reconnect with some of theirfavoriteTNGcharacters. And Stewart revealed on the same podcast how he was drawn back in to reprise the role of Jean-Luc once more. Stewart told host Josh Horowitz:
“What was so interesting about Picard, and the main reason why I decided to commit to three seasons of it, was that Akiva Goldsman talked to me about the changes that had happened in my life in the last 20 years. And he said, ‘Were the any?’ And I said, ‘Of course, lots and lots. And new journeys and new experiences and relationships.'
And he said, ‘Exactly, that has also been Jean-Luc’s experience.’ He’s not the same man. He’s no longer captain of the Enterprise. He was made an admiral. It really became desk work, which is not what he ever wanted to do.”
