No, ‘The Paper’ Is Not a ‘The Office’ Remake
As evidenced in the trailer,The Paperis not a remake ofThe Office, but a spinoff that acts as a sort of spiritual successor to the original series. The connections to the iconic sitcom are there, made most apparent with Oscar Nuñez returning as fan-favorite Óscar Martínez. However,The Paperseems intent on forging its own path, which includes a bevy of new characters. Not only does the dynamic between the co-workers seem different, but the protagonist is about as far from a Michael Scott copycat as he can be.
The Paperstar Domhnall Gleeson talked about his character getting compared to Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell in the 2005 sitcom. Gleeson discarded the idea that his news publication editor was anything like Scott, pointing out that Carrell and Ricky Gervais, who playedDavid Brentin the British version ofThe Office, were “incredible in loads of different ways.“The Paperwill follow suit with a brand-new character that Gleeson hopes audiences will still fall in love.

“I don’t think my character’s like Michael Scott at all. I think if you’re trying to compete with what Steve did or with what Ricky Gervais did, I think it would be a massive mistake. They are geniuses who are incredible in loads of different ways. We made a whole new character. And it’s a whole new sort of set up, but I hope people will find a reason to love him as well, just in a different way than they did the guys before.”
