Amazon’sTomb Raiderreboot appeared to finally be moving ahead, withSophie Turnerrumored to be playing Lara Croft in the new series. However, the project has received the latest in a long line of nails in the proverbial coffin, as Turner herself has seemingly denied any involvement with the show… that is, if you believe the actress’s coy answer to her rumored casting. Sophie Turner was revealed to be on the shortlist to play the new Lara Croft last October, but the project has received a severe lack of updates since. With development believed to be still ongoing, fans are desperate to know when Amazon’sTomb Raiderreboot will be released, but they won’t get any hints from Turner.
During an interview with MovieWeb’s George Edelman, Sophie Turner was asked about her rumored casting in the upcomingTomb Raiderreboot, and the actress was as sneaky and coy as Lara Croft herself when giving her answer. “I wouldn’t know what you’re talking about with that project you mentioned…” Sophie Turner teased. The actress’s casting as Lara Croft was seemingly confirmed in November last year, as theGame of Thronesstar beat outBohemian Rhapsody’s Lucy Boynton for the role. In May of this year, Turner added further fuel to the casting fire by revealing some holiday snaps thatshowcased her potential Lara Croft physique. However, Amazon’sTomb Raiderdeal with Phoebe Waller-Bridge underwent some big changes earlier this year, so, judging from Turner’s reaction, that report may now be defunct.

While Sophie Turner neither confirmed nor denied her casting in theTomb Raiderseries, she did explain what she would want the show’s production to be like, were she to play Lara Croft in the reboot. Having a lot of big IP experience from her time as Jean Grey in Fox’s X-Men universe, Turner said:
“But when it comes to franchises, or like, bigger projects like that, there’s a lot more cooks in the kitchen and a lot less space for your own personal creativity to come in. But it also depends on the people that you’re making it with. If you’re with 10 or 12 like-minded people who want to hear what you can bring to it, then it’s a different experience. But if it’s all just down to some big wigs you’ve never met at a studio that’s miles and miles and miles away, and they’re directing you from there, then it’s challenging.”

What’s Going On With Amazon’s ‘Tomb Raider’ Reboot?
Amazon’sTomb Raiderreboot series has been stuck in development limbo since the moment it was announced. In 2023, the studio confirmed thatFleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge would be writing the next installment in the franchise, which would take the live-actionTomb RaiderIP from the big screen to the small one. However, after two years, the multi-million-dollar deal didn’t materialize into anything close to a finished show.
Most surprisingly, though, the deal between Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Amazon has been renewed, albeit with some altered terms. What was once an exclusive deal is now a first-look deal, meaning Amazon gets priority in deciding whether to greenlight the series, before it is shown around Hollywood to other investors. Meanwhile,Netflix’s animatedTomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Crofthas been renewed for a second season.
