The Secret Life of Pets 2was easily able to win this weekend’s box office battle. The animated sequel took in $47.1 million, which was substantially higher thanDark Phoenix.The Secret Life of Pets 2has been receiving mixed reviews from critics, but audiences seem to be enjoying it more. The movie currently has an A- on CinemaScore and a 54% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With that being said, it is doing a lot better than Fox’sDark Phoenix.
Dark Phoenixis currently the lowest earningX-Men filmin franchise history with $33 million domestically. The previous owner of that record went to 2013’sWolverinewith $53.1 million, which is still much better than what the latest installment was able to pull off at the box office this weekend. The sequel is the first of the franchise to be released under the Disney umbrella after the Fox acquisition earlier this year and currently holds a 22% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Disney’s live-action adaptation ofAladdintook number three at thebox officethis weekend after bringing in $24.5 million. Since debuting three weeks ago, the remake has been able to earn $604.8 million globally and is performing much better than initially estimated. As for the number four spot, that honor goes toGodzilla: King of the Monsters, which was able to bring in $15.5 million in its second week in theaters. To date, the sequel has only made $78.5 million domestically and has fared much better overseas where it has taken $213.7 million.
The Elton John biopicRocketmanfell down to number five this weekend with $14 million. The movie has been receiving a lot of comparisons toBohemian Rhapsody, but it does not look like this was the best time of year for the biopic to hit theaters in terms of box office growth. Elsewhere, Blumhouse’sMacontinues to do better than expected with $7.8 million this weekend for the number six spot. The thriller, which stars Octavia Spencer has made over $40 million globally since launching last weekend.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellumfell down to number seven this weekend after brining in $7.4 million. The third chapter has been praised by fans and critics, leaving room for a fourth installment in the franchise.Avengers: Endgametook the eighth position after taking $4.8 million. As of this writing, the MCU movie is at $2.73 billion and is currently creeping up on James Cameron’sAvatarto become the highest grossing movie of all time. Rounding out the top ten,Detective Pikachutook the ninth spot andBooksmarttook number ten with $2.9 million and $1.5 million, respectively.
