Production has officially started on the second season ofShadow and Bone. Along with the announcement that new episodes are officially underway, Netflix also revealed that four new names have been added to the cast. While Danielle Galligan, Daisy Head, and Calahan Skogman have been promoted to series regulars, joining the cast are Anna Leong Brophy, Lewis Tan, Patrick Gibson, and Jack Wolfe.
It was previously announced that the seriesShadow and Bone, based on Leigh Bardugo’s worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels, had been renewed for a second season. With production moving forward, Bola Ogun, Laura Belsey, Karen Gaviola, and Mairzee Almas will direct this season. Shawn Levy, Josh Barry, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen are also executive producing for 21 Laps Entertainment alongside Pouya Shahbazian for Loom Studios and Shelley Meals.
The season 1 synopsis reads: “Based on Leigh Bardugo’s worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels,Shadow and Bonefinds us in a war-torn world where lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive.”

How Will the New Cast of Characters Play Into the Second Season?
The new cast features Anna Leong Brophy (Back,Traces) as Tamar Kir-Bataar; Patrick Gibson (The Portable Door,The OA)as Nikolai Lantsov; Lewis Tan (Mortal Kombat,Wu Assassins) as Tolya Yul-Bataar; and Jack Wolfe (The Magic Flute,The Witcher) as Wylan Hendricks. Returning cast members who’ve been upped to series regulars are Danielle Galligan as Nina Zenik; Daisy Head as Genya Safin; and Calahan Skogman as Matthias Helvar. The show also stars Ben Barnes, Amita Suman, Julian Kostov, Jessie Mei Li, Freddy Carter, Sujaya Dasgupta, Kit Young, Dean Lennox Kelly, and Archie Renaux.
Of where the author wanted to season 2 go, Leigh Bardugo previously toldCollider: “I mean, for me, the big thing, I want to see Sturmhond, the Privateer. I want to see Wylan, who is the only pro we don’t get to see in Season 1. I’d love to see Tolya and Tamar. The problem with seeing your characters brought to life by fabulous actors is that it makes you very greedy, and I would be thrilled to see who we could find to play what are quite challenging roles.”
Bardugo added: “There’s just so much story. And I feel a lot of relief because I just releasedRule of Wolves, which is a goodbye for now to the Grishaverse. There’s a very good chance I’ll write more Grishaverse books in the future, but if I don’t, I feel like I’ve tied up the storylines in a way that gives me a lot of peace, so that the writers of the show can be free to be bold and daring in where they want to take the stories. There’s plenty of material for them, should they desire it.”
Shadow and Boneseason 1 is streaming onNetflix. It’s not yet clear when season 2 will arrive.
