Shazam!was a powerhouse at the box office, bringing in $361.9 million worldwide, arriving as a hit for DC Films and Warner Bros. shorty after the smash success ofAquaman. The movie won’t hit Blu-ray and Digital until this July. But the director isn’t done having fun with fans just yet, with the superhero adventure still lingering around in select discount theaters. Today, David F. Sandberg has shared an animated deleted scene that he got to voice himself. He says this about the excised moment from the movie.
“For a deleted scene in Shazam there was supposed to be a bad cartoon playing on a tv in the background. I of course saw it as a chance to animate and do dumb voices myself. This is how far I got before we decided to cut the scene. Animated in Moho.”
The animated clip is from a cartoon series about Victor Frankenstein and his son, who doesn’t want to go to prom, because he looks like a monster. He has a ghost friend, and some wisdom is laid down, and yes, it very much looks like something you might find your kids watching on Cartoon Network in the middle of the afternoon. It adds absolutely nothing toShazam!or its storyline, but it is cute and amusing in its own unique way.
David F. Sandbergprovided all the voices in the clip, showing off his talent for giving life to a kids' cartoon. He may have a second career waiting for him if this whole directing thing doesn’t pan out. It was recently announced thatShazam!will hit Digital on July 2 before coming to Blu-ray, DVD and 4K UHD on July 16. The release will be loaded down with deleted scenes, and it looks like this is probably one of the ones that will be included.
Shazam!is the7th movie thus far released in the DCEU, which notably got off to a rocky start withMan of Steelback in 2013, followed byBatman V SupermanandSuicide Squadin 2016,Wonder WomanandJustice Leaguein 2017 andAquamanlast Christmas. This installment introduces magic into the DCEU, somethingSuicide Squadalso did to a certain extent with Enchantress.
Shazam!follows 14-year-old orphanBilly Batson, who only needs to shout out one word to transform into the adult superhero Shazam. Still a kid at heart, Shazam revels in this new version of himself by doing what any other teen would do, having fun while testing out his newfound powers. But he soon must defeat theevil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, who is trying to get his hands on Shazam’s magical abilities. Billy lives in a foster home with several other orphans, and it’s easy to see how this animated clip would have snuck itself into the background of a scene.
