Before the release ofCaptain America: Civil War, many fans seemed to be a bit burnt out on Spider-Man. Not because they didn’t love him anymore, but as the character was heading for a third reboot, it just started to feel like a bit much. And thenTom Hollandshowed up on screen and we were all on board again. In recent weeks, we have been getting a flurry of casting news forSpider-Man: Homecomingand now the film’s directorJon Wattshas opened up a bit about the movie and more specifically, the cast.
In a recent interview withThe Daily Beast,Jon Watts, who has been pretty quiet up to this point, talked quite a bit about the movie, though he was shy on specific details. The cast forHomecomingis looking like it will be fairly diverse and the director talked a bit about that and the reasoning for it. To him, it was just logical and was a reflection of the environment thatPeter Parkerlives in.
“Peter Parker goes to high school in Queens, and Queens is one of-if not the-most diverse places in the world. So I just wanted it to reflect what that actually looks like.”
The cast for the film has exploded recently withMichael Keatonaboard the film as the villain, which was more or less confirmed byWattsin a Tweet a few weeks ago. The news also just broke thatSilicon ValleystarMartin StarrandLogan-Marshall Greenhave also joined up withHollandforHomecoming. But the most buzzed about casting by far was that ofDonald Glover, who is rumored to be in talks for an unspecified role in the movie. ThoughWattscouldn’t clear things up, he did at least address it.
“I can’t talk about anything like that! That would have been so amazing, if I’d just completely spilled some secret like that by accident. I probably can’t say anything. There’s a little sniper dot on me at all times, just in case. They’ll hit me with a tranq dart.”
Many fans were quick to speculate thatGloverwould be playing the other Spider-Man,Miles Morales. Ever since the young, half-black, half-hispanic character debuted in 2011, fans have pretty much been dying to see him and his black and red suit on the big screen.Glovervoices Morales in theUltimate Spider-Mananimated series and he was being petitioned for the role inThe Amazing Spider-Manbefore it went toAndrew Garfield. No matter whoGloveris playing, he does add some talent and diversity to the cast.
We have heard a lot about the tone ofSpider-Man: Homecoming, even though we don’t know much about the actual story. We know that it is going to be taking place in a high school setting and is said to have a “John Hughes” vibe to it. According toWatts, this is going to allow them to explore some new territory that previousSpider-Manmovies haven’t been able to.
“It’s been really fun to just look for things that none of the other Spider-Man movies have really explored before, and decide if that’s something we want to work into that. And really making it a high school movie, and committing to that, and not having that just be the beginning of the movie. The John Hughes sort of tone. When you’re looking at it through that prism, it really opens up the door to a lot of possibilities.”
We still have about a year beforeHomecominghits theaters, soWattswill probably have to keep quiet about major details for a while longer. But the movie is ramping up for production and withGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2andDoctor Strangealready confirmed to have a presence at San Diego Comic Con this year, don’t be surprised if we get a showing forSpider-Man: Homecomingas well.Spider-Man: Homecomingis set for a August 10, 2025 release.
