Ever sinceIdris Elbaentered discussions to play an unspecified character in Paramount’sStar Trek Beyondback in March, it was always rumored that he is playing themain villain. While we still don’t know his character’s name, actor/screenwriterSimon Peggrevealed earlier this year thatIdris Elbais playing a brand new character who hasn’t been established in any of the previousStar Trekmovies or TV shows. While promoting his upcoming movieBeasts of No Nation,Idris Elbarevealed toMTVthat he has never played a character like this before.
“Simon [Pegg] and the team have written a very interesting, complex journey for my character. You’ve never seen me play a character like this.”
Idris Elbaconfirmed in July that his unnamed character has a “confrontation” withZachary Quinto’s Spock, althoughSimon Pegghas confirmed thatIdris Elba’s character is not aKlingon. It’s worth noting, though, thatSimon Peggstated numerous times thatBenedict Cumberbatchwas not Khan inStar Trek Into Darkness, which is exactly who he was playing.Idris Elbaessentially confirmed that he is theStar Trek Beyondvillain, calling his character “groundbreaking.”
“I thinkStar Trekhas prided themselves as being quite classic when it comes to villains, like ‘he’s a guy who wants to end the world,’ there’s no doubt about that. But in this version of the film, there’s a slightly different twist to that. It’s quite an interesting journey, which I think is groundbreaking for the franchise. But, it still keeps with the ‘classic bad guy is a classic bad guy’ tone. It’s been hard work. I’ve been doing 18-hour days. It’s tough work, but I’m looking forward to people seeing this film.”
