On Friday night, Paramount Pictures debuted thesecond trailerfor their highly-anticipated sci-fi sequelStar Trek Beyond, which hits theaters nationwide July 22. The studio also released a new poster with the footage, but that one-sheet didn’t feature any members of the ensemble cast. Today the studio has rectified that by debuting a new one-sheet that features several members of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew, along with two new characters,Sofia Boutella’s Jaylah and the villainous Krall, played byIdris Elba.
Star Trek Beyond, the highly anticipated next installment inParamount’s globally popularStar Trek series, created byGene Roddenberryand reintroduced byJ.J. Abramsin 2009, returns with directorJustin Lin(The Fast and the Furiousfranchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. InStar Trek Beyond, the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test. The movie comes as the franchise celebrates the50th Anniversaryof the originalStar Trekseries, which debuted in the fall of 1966.

It has been confirmed thatStar Trek Beyondwill be set during theU.S.S. Enterprise’s five-year mission to explore new worlds. 2009’sStar Trektook in $257.7 million at the domestic box office and $385.6 million worldwide, with the 2013 follow-upStar Trek Into Darknesstaking in $228.7 million domestically and $467.3 million worldwide. We’ll have to wait and see ifStar Trek Beyondcan out-gross its predecessors this summer. It certainly won’t be an easy task, though since this sci-fi thriller will have plenty of competition in mid-July.
Star Trek Beyondwill be going up against Warner Bros.' thrillerLights Outand 20th Century Fox’s animated sequelIce Age: Collision Coursein theaters on July 22. It will also be sandwiched between two more highly-anticipated movies, Sony’sGhostbusterson July 15 and Universal’sJason Bourneon July 29. It’s too early to tell how well these movies will fare at the box office, but the anticipation forStar Trek Beyondonly seems to be getting bigger and bigger, after the release of the new trailer last week.
