As revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, theStar Trekfranchise is following up its recent musical episode inStar Trek: Strange New Worldsby contemplating a full-blown musical stage show. While the details on the project are very sketchy right now,Strange New Worlds’executive producer Akiva Goldsman shared the exciting and unexpected update.
Like manyone-off musical episodes before it, the Season 2 episode ofStrange New Worlds, entitled “Subspace Rhapsody”, became an instant classic, and was roundly praised by fans and critics alike. The events of the episode unfold when an encounter with an experimental, naturally occurring quantum probability field causes James T. Kirk and company to break into song and sing their way through their thoughts and feelings. Having never dipped a toe in musical waters, it was so popular that the SDCC Paramount panel saw one fan asking if there will be any further musical interludes in the upcoming third season of the series.

While Goldsman doesn’t see that happening, the mention of a stage show came up instead, much to the shock of fellow panelist, Rebecca Romijn, who plays Una Chin-Riley in the series. Romijn responded to the statement by saying,“Akiva, I can’t believe you just said that!”

In the series, Anson Mount plays Christopher Pike, captain of the USS Enterprise. The actor has certainly proved popular in the role, and has previously spoken about wanting to continue playing the role for as long as he is allowed. That, of course, depends greatly on audiences sticking with the series, as they have thus far.
