With just under three months left untilStar Wars: The Force Awakensinvades theaters nationwide, there still isn’t much we know about this highly-anticipated adventure. Many hope thenew trailer, which directorJ.J. Abramspromised is coming this fall, will shed light on some burning questions fans have had over the past few years. There is even less we know about the subsequent sequels,Star Wars: Episode VIII, directed byRian Johnson, andColin Trevorrow’sStar Wars: Episode IX. While discussing his blockbusterJurassic Worldon theJurassic Cast Podcast,Colin Trevorrowteased that theStar Warsfranchise is a true “universe,” where every type of story could be told.
“I obviously can’t talk too much aboutStar Wars, but the idea of that ‘Universe,’ that word gets thrown around a lot as far as movies are concerned and what people are building, that one’s an actual universe. I think that the size and scope of that. Every kind of story we can think of can be told in theStar Warsuniverse, because it is endless and boundless.”
Back in July, whenJurassic Worldwas bringing in huge box office numbers,Colin Trevorrowwas rumored to sign on as theStar Wars: Episode IXdirector. Then in August, just three days beforeColin Trevorrowwas confirmed,J.J. Abramsshot down rumors that he would come back to directStar Wars 9, although he will be on board to help shape the stories told byRian JohnsonandColin Trevorrow. While Disney and LucasFilm haven’t issued a concrete release date yet,Star Wars: Episode IXis expected to hit theaters in 2019.
It hasn’t been confirmed yet ifColin Trevorrowwill also write the screenplay with his writing partnerDerek Connolly, the co-writer of his first two films,Safety Not GuaranteedandJurassic World. They are both coming back to write the script for Universal’s sequelJurassic World 2, butColin Trevorrowisn’t directing that follow-up.Derek Connollyrecently signed on to write Warner Bros.‘Kong: Skull Island, which is set for release on July 05, 2025.
