A newStar Warsnovel hit the shelves today, which answers another question fans have had for over 30 years: What happened to the Ewoks?
TheEwokswere first introduced in the 1983 classicReturn of the Jedi, with these pint-sized characters playing a big role in the Rebel Alliance' victory over the Empire. Unfortunately, they didn’t show up in last year’sStar Wars: The Force Awakens, and we haven’t learned anything about what happened to these creatures in the aftermath ofReturn of the Jedi. Earlier today,Chuck Wendig’s new novelAftermath: Life Debtwas released, and an excerpt fromio9reveals new details about the Ewoks.
Aftermath: Life Debtcenters on the life debt between Han Solo and Chewbacca, but one of the more interesting details in the novel reveals what the Ewoks have been up to after they helped take down the Death Star. The excerpt of the novel centers on a Rebel commander named Dade, who has had his leg blown off during a ground battle with Imperial forces. To help ease his post-traumatic stress disorder, a doctor named Arsad offers Dade a therapy droid dubbed QT-9, to help him recover. When Dade says he doesn’t want a therapy droid, Asrad has this to say, revealing what happened to the Ewoks
“I could put you in for a therapy Ewok, instead. Some of the native Endor creatures have agreed to travel offworld to help veterans like you recuperate. As a matter of recompense for saving their home.”
Dade turns down this offer too, saying that the Ewoks “smell horrible.” Of course, it remains to be seen whether or not these lovable creatures will return in any future novels or even the new movies and spinoffs, but now at least we know what happened to them after they helped save Endor. It’s also worth noting that, one theory claimed these creatures shouldn’t have even survived in the first place.
