After spending its first two weekends atop thebox officecharts, Universal Pictures has another certifiable hit on their hands withStraight Outta Compton. TheN.W.Abiopic has taken in over $111 million so far, and many fans are wondering if the studio has any plans for a sequel. Over the weekend,TMZreported that a follow-up is in the works, which will featureSnoop Dogg,Tupac Shakurand other West Coast rappers. ButEntertainment Weeklysays Universal Pictures isn’t admitting to any current plans for aStraight Outta Comptonsequel, with the following statement.

“At this time there are no plans for aStraight Outta Comptonsequel.”

The original report fromTMZdid not specifically say that Universal Pictures was involved in this project, and that it was a “sequel, of sorts” toStraight Outta Compton. Rapper Daz Dillinger told the site that the story would pick up where the original biopic left off, following the careers ofSnoop Dogg,Tupac Shakur, Warren G., Kurupt and Daz Dillinger himself. The project’s title is reportedlyDogg Pound 4 Life, with the story following these rappers' rise to the top along with how gang violence impacted the music industry.

Daz Dillinger said thatStraight Outta ComptonproducerIce Cubegave him the idea to make this movie, butIce CubeandDr. Drewill not be on board to produce.Ice Cube’s publicist toldEntertainment Weeklythat he has not authorized any type of sequel forStraight Outta Compton. The report also claims thatDr. Dre’s own son Curtis Young will play his father, but the actors who playedSnoop Dogg(Keith Stanfield) andIce Cube(O’Shea Jackson Jr.) inStraight Outta Comptonwill not reprise their roles for this project, with new actors being cast.

Even if this project is not officially in the works, with Universal or another studio, the narrative time frame certainly does make sense. The rise of the “gangsta rap” genre in the early 1990s would be the next logical era to explore, sinceStraight Outta Comptonessentially ends as this era begins. Marcc Rose playedTupac Shakurin a brief cameo appearance inStraight Outta Compton, with Sheldon A. Smith playing Warren G.. The report also claims thatSuge Knightwill be a part of this story, but the producers won’t be working with him directly.

If Universal does move forward with aStraight Outta Comptonsequel, it isn’t known if the studio would partner up with Daz Dillinger to tell this story. Morgan Creek has been developing aTupac Shakurbiopic for several years, withCarl Franklindirecting, but no cast members have been attached. Do you think aStraight Outta Comptonsequel should happen?
