In less than one month, Warner Bros.' expansive DC Extended Universe (DCEU) will continue with the highly-anticipatedSuicide Squad. After the negative critical reception of this spring’sBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, ifSuicide Squadhits it big at the box office, it could breathe new life into the DCEU, withJustice Leaguejust around the corner next year. As you surely know by watching the trailers,Suicide Squadis chocked full of colorful characters, one of whom, as it turns out, has a secret weapon.
Margot Robbiestars as the iconic Harley Qinn inSuicide Squad, who has been one of the focal points of the marketing campaign forSuicide Squadthus far. We’ve seen in the trailers and other footage that she is fairly psychotic, which is obviously why she matches up with The Joker (Jared Leto) quite well. Many of her Task Force X members have special skills, such as Deadshot’s (Will Smith) marksmanship, El Diablo’s (Jay Hernandez) control of fire and Enchantress' (Cara Delevingne) unspecified supernatural powers, but during an interview withVanity Fair,Margot Robbieteases that she has a special skill of her own.
“She loves causing mayhem and destruction. She’s incredibly devoted toThe Joker. They have a dysfunctional relationship, but she loves him anyway. She used to be a gymnast — that’s her skill set when fighting.”
While this is the first we’ve heard of Harley Quinn’s gymnast background, it may not be too surprising, if you think back to the first trailer. One of the first glimpses we got of Harley was in her cell atBelle Reve, where she was seen hanging upside down from a pair of sheets affixed to the ceiling of her cell. Naturally, we don’t know how much of her gymnast background is even discussed in the movie, but we’ll find out for sure on August 5. Warner Bros. recently announced a Harley Quinn spinoff, so it’s possible we’ll learn much more about her background in that movie.
The ensemble cast for directorDavid Ayer’sSuicide Squadalso includesDeadshot(Will Smith), Slipknot (Adam Beach), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). There have also been reports that Warner Bros. wantsDavid Ayerto come back and directSuicide Squad 2, with production reportedly being eyed to start early next year. Stay tuned for more on Harley Quinn and the rest of theSuicide Squadas we get closer to the August 5 release date.
