BeforeDeadpoolhit theaters last month, no one expected it to have the success it did, especially since it was anR-ratedmovie. After it shattered box office records with a $135 million debut, it had many wondering if other supehrero adventures would follow suit and push the envelope with an R rating. One of the films many thought could benefit from an R rating is Warner Bros.' upcomingSuicide Squad, which is currently in post-production and set for release on August 5. While promotingBatman v Superman: Dawn of JusticewithCollider, producerCharles Rovenconfirmed that they’re still aiming for a PG-13 rating forSuicide Squad.

“At the moment, my understanding is we are still releasingSuicide Squadas aPG-13, so there hasn’t been to my mind a serious conversation about doing anything other than that. I understand whyDeadpoolwas released as an R-rated film, and I think that the DCJustice Leaguecharacters, particularly because so many of them are so iconographic, have been around for so long and for so many generations that have grown up with them, and that are still growing up with them, I think we want to present them, when we finally present them, to the broadest possible audience that we can. I think that’s why we’ve planned on making these movies PG-13. I’m not seeing any real reason to change. We’ve made some pretty edgy films that are rated PG-13. You never want to say “never” because we all evolve, but right now I think we’re staying that course.”

Jason Fuchs

AfterBatman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeandSuicide Squadhit theaters this year,Wonder Womanwill debut next June, with production currently under way, followed byJustice League Part 1. While the DC universe is set for the next four years, we reported last week that Warner Bros. is still developingLobo, with writerJason Fuchs, who wrote theWonder Womanscript. When asked if there are other DC properties that could benefit from an R rating, the producer had this to say.

“I am a fan of other DC characters that I’m not producing those films. Right now my focus on the DC Universe is the DC Justice League Universe, and the DC Justice League Universe is the DC Justice League heroes and the DC Justice League villains. So I have not really focused yet on finding a character. There’s a group we’re maybe kicking around the idea of it. We haven’t actually yet fully put it into development so I can’t really talk about it, I’m sorry. But at present, for the time being, we’re headed down this course.”

The all-star ensemble cast forSuicide SquadincludesWill Smith(Deadshot),Margot Robbie(Harley Quinn),Jai Courtney(Boomerang),Joel Kinnaman(Rick Flagg),Cara Delevingne(Enchantress),Viola Davis(Amanda Waller),Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje(Killer Croc), andJay Hernandez(El Diablo).Scott EastwoodandRay Olubowalealso appear in the movie, but their characters have not been revealed.Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justicewill be getting an R-Rated extended cut when it comes to Blu-ray. We’re not sure if the same will happen withSuicide Squad. Are you disappointed thatSuicide Squadwill arrive in theaters with a PG-13 instead of R?
