Supermansoars into theaters on July 11, finally bringing the rebooted DCU to the big screen. Along with a smattering of popular and underappreciated DC Comics characters, the film also includes a classic Man of Steel design choice: the iconic red trunks.David Corenswetplays Clark Kent/Superman in the film, and, as phenomenal as he appears in the trailers and marketing material, the actor said it was a unique challenge to portray the beloved superhero. Actors often complain about the difficulty of intense and emotionally demanding roles, but David Corenswet had the opposite problem when playing Superman in the DCU.
David Corenswet recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly alongside several of hisSupermancastmates, and the actor shared the surprising challenge of playing the DCU’s Man of Steel. Many would assume that the hardest challenge would be the workouts, especially asHenry Cavill’s physique in Zack Snyder’sMan of Steelhas now become the benchmark for the character. But Corenswet’s issue is related to the performance. In fact, he finds it harder to play a character like Superman than a darker and grittier protagonist. The actor explained:

“I’ve listened to Christopher Reeve talk about how he felt going from theater and a classical training to wearing tights on screen. It’s harder in some ways to play Superman and then to do a great play or a dramatic film, because as an actor, you feel like the seriousness of the work somehow supports you. It allows the whole thing to feel more grounded. There is a unique challenge to playing a guy who wears his underwear on the outside and can fly.”
While David Corenswet foundSuperman’s larger-than-life, positive personaa challenge, he said that the work ethic and mentality of writer/director James Gunn helped him immensely, even when he had to wear underpants over his super-suit. “I think I had the great fortune of getting a little bit of both,” Corenswet continued. “I was definitely on team trunks-on-the-outside for this iteration of Superman, but I certainly felt James took the work very seriously.”

David Corenswet’s ‘Superman’ Has Been Compared to a Surprising Past DC Actor
When fans think of the Supermen of yesteryear, they think of Henry Cavill, Christopher Reeve, and Brandon Routh. But, during the conversation, David Corenswet reveals that his physique forSupermanhas been compared to another notable actor who previously portrayed the Man of Steel. While the article compared Corenswet’s build to Henry Cavill’s, the actor said:
“I’ve also got a lot of physical comparisons to Tom Welling, who played Superman and Clark Kent on Smallville. When I was growing up, he was the Superman who was on TV every week. I think, to one extent or another, all of the Superman actors…There’s some Venn diagram of our physical characteristics, which makes sense for a superhero who is classically the one who doesn’t wear a mask.”

Alongside David Corenswet,Supermanalso stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.Supermanreleases in theaters on July 11.
