A highly divisive British supernatural thriller series is making waves onPrime Video. Debuting in 2023, with the second season landing on the streaming platform just last week,The Rigfollows a group of workers on a remote oil rig who suddenly find themselves surrounded by a mysterious fog…and even more mysterious supernatural forces. The series has now entered the Prime Video top 10, landing at #4, with audiences clearly gripped by the show, which will have sci-fi and horror fans reminiscing aboutJohn Carpenter’s 1982 masterpiece,The Thing.
However, despite its streaming popularity,The Righas proven to be deeply divisive among critics and audiences. The series, which starsGame of ThronesactorIain Glenalongside Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek) and Martin Compston (Line of Duty), scored a reasonable 67% from critics for its first season, with the consensus reading, “The Rigmay not plumb its full potential thanks to too many crude clichés, but this supernatural eco-thriller has enough ambience and appealing performances to make for a solid binge.”

Audiences, though, found a lot to dislike withThe Rig, with the show being met with a big, green splat alongside a lackluster score of 44% on the Popcornmeter. Unfortunately, the second season fared even worse with audiences. The RigSeason 2 now holds a score of just 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, with user Boomer B writing, “The actors have been to theDays of Our Livesschool of acting. B grade at best. The sets are reminiscent ofStar Treksets from the 60’s. Plot holes you could drive a truck through. Just nope.” Ty J, meanwhile, adds, “Really enjoyed season 1. But season 2 is utter dross. Storyline is so predictable, and the acting is hammy and laughable. Such a good idea totally ruined.”
Will ‘The Rig’ Return for Season 3?
With Season 2, critics largely agree with audiences this time around. Brittany Frederick ofCBRrated the series just 5/10 and says, “The RigSeason 2 never shakes that same feeling that the story has gone on too long. It’s the same concept and the same very obvious messaging, just in a different location.” Jonathon Wilson ofReady Steady Cut, however, found the return to be animprovement on the first outing, declaring, “The Rigand the crew of the Kinloch Bravo return to Prime Video for another six-episode season that is significantly bigger and bolder, and also – this is the surprising bit – slightly better.”
16 Supernatural TV Series You May Have Forgotten
Many of these shows are rarely mentioned nowadays, but they paved the way for the recent boom in supernatural TV series.
But willThe Rigget a Season 3? Stars Rochenda Sandall and Iain Glen certainly hope so, with the former revealing to theIrish Mirror, “We’d always like to come back!” And Glen was quick to concur, adding, “We would love to come back. In all honesty, we really love doing it. We think there’s more story to tell, you know. The fact is it’ll go and hopefully people love it as much as they did the first season, and if they do I think we’ll be back for a third." No doubtthe Prime Video popularitywill help the chances ofThe RigSeason 3 happening.
