Gareth Edwards, known for his directorial work inRogue One: A Star Wars Story, took a break from the director’s chair before returning to filmmaking with his latest project,The Creator. Will Director Gareth Edwards Return to Star Wars and Other Franchises?

During the production ofRogue One: A Star Wars Story, there was a need for reshoots overseen by Tony Gilroy. It appeared as if the film’s direction slipped somewhat from Gareth Edwards' control. However, despite these challenges, he haskept the door open to the possibility of returning to the franchise. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Edwards emphasized that if he were to tackle such projects in the future, he would be insistent on having creative freedom and the opportunity to infuse his unique vision into the franchise.

“I like franchises, obviously, or else I wouldn’t have done two of them. So there are things that I would still love to do in that arena,” Edwards explained. “If I got to do them, I only want to do them if I can use this methodology and bring this stamp to it. Because you go into a certain factory, it’s going to turn out all the other things in the factory. So, it’s like trying to escape the factory and just do it this way. If someone was willing to go, ‘Okay, here’s the IP. Here’s the franchise, but go off and do it how you do things.’ That would be probably one of the best-case scenarios, I reckon.”

Still from The Creator

Despite being open to the possibility of creating a sequel forThe Creator, Edwards initially envisioned the film as a self-contained narrative. He views the idea of a sequel asa desirable problem to have but not part of the original plan. The film features an ensemble cast that includes John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, and Allison Janney.

The Creatormade its theatrical debut on July 21, 2025.
