Although the potential sale of The CW caused some unease recently, the network has been steaming ahead withgreen-lighting new programs, including theSupernaturalandWalkerprequels, and the list also features a pilot order forGotham Knights,according toThe Hollywood Reporter.The series comes from the producers ofBatwomanand sees The CW continuing its tradition of adding new DC shows to its line up every year. With many of their currentArrowversebased DC shows seeming to be heading towards an end,Gotham Knightswill likely be one of the series that will once again bolster up their DC content.
It is three months since The CW announced that they would be developing aGotham Knightsseries, and the official pilot order seems to suggest that whatever happens with the reported volatile position of The CW itself, if the network is sold to a new owner, they will be taking over a lot of potential series in various stages of production. There are a number ofArrowversealum involved in the pilot of the show, such as Greg Berlanti, as well as theBatwomanteam of Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux and Natalie Abrams, meaning that the show should come away with some of the same standards of the other DC series on The CW.
When the original announcement was made about the development of aGotham Knightsseries, it was revealed that the show would revolve around “Bruce Wayne’s rebellious adopted son as he bands together with the children of Batman’s villains when they get framed for the Dark Knight’s murder. The team must band together to clear their names while also becoming Gotham’s new protectors.” One thing that was made clear is that the series may be coming from theBatwomanteam, but it will not act as any spinoff but will be a drama that is a standalone DC project.
Gotham Knights Will Be Another Series Based in a Non-Batman Centric Gotham City
While Warner Bros. is putting outThe Batmannext month and has plans for two spinoff shows and theBatgirlmovie heading to HBO Max, The CW are tied to mostly making Gotham based shows without the Dark Knight thanks to Warner Bros. preferring to keep him for the big screen and their HBO Max output. The real question is, will there be room for so many unrelated series’ all based in the same territory?
Although The CW spent a lot of effort withCrisis on Infinite Earthsto bring together the majority of their shows in one world, the recent addition ofStargirland the upcomingNaomihas already started to undo this kind of shared universe approach by setting them on different Earths. With the addition of two unconnected Gotham-based shows to the roster, it would appear that the future of The CW’s DC output is very much every man – and woman – for themselves. While there are no casting details available yet, it will surely not be too long before that kind of information starts to be revealed.
