ABC is looking to double-down on one of its hitcomedy serieswith a newGoldbergsspin-off set a decade after the original show. The network is finalizing a deal withAdam F. Goldberg, who will executive produce an untitled spin-off of his hit seriesThe Goldbergs, set in the 1990s, that centers onBryan Callen’s character Coach Melor.Bryan Callen’s character has appeared in 17 episodes ofThe Goldbergs, starting with the 10th episode of Season 1.

Deadlinereports that the series will center on Coach Melor and another teacher, who both become an “unlikely father figure” to the school secretary’s three rambunctious children. It remains to be seen if any of the other characters fromThe Goldbergswill cross over into the show, which would make matters interesting since both shows would be set a decade apart. It also wasn’t stated if this new show meansBryan Callen’s Coach Melor will no longer be arecurring characteron the flagship series.

Mark Firek, a writer and executive producer onThe Goldbergs, will write the pilot script forThe Goldbergs spin-off.The GoldbergscreatorAdam F. Goldbergexecutive producing alongsideFirek, Happy Madison’sDoug Robinson,Seth Gordonand Sony Pictures Television. ABC has handed out a script commitment with a high-six-figure penalty to the single-camera comedy project.

ABC had previously tried to create a comedy spin-off based off another one of its hit Wednesday night comedy shows,Modern Family. The network had originally conceived a series based off a recurring character played byRob Riggle, but the network decided to go through the regular development season as a stand alone pilot. As forThe Goldbergs, the show is currently in its fourth season, which has already included a Halloween tribute toStephen King’sMisery.

This news comes after talk surfaced regarding aStranger Things crossoverwithThe Goldbergs, which started with a Twitter exchange betweenAdam F. GoldbergandStranger ThingsproducerShawn Levy.Adam F. Goldbergrevealed in September that he actually does have an idea of how to cross over the Netflix show withThe Goldbergs, which would continue his working relationship withShawn Levy, who is producingAdam F. Goldberg’s upcoming seriesImaginary Mary.
