Ridley Scott’s latest project is calledThe Journey. The director partnered with Turkish Airlines to make a short film for theSuper Bowl. This year’s big game has dropped some pretty heavy commercials including the first look at Guillermo del Toro’sScary Stories to Tell in the Darkand our second look at Marvel Studios’Avengers: Endgame. But, Ridley Scott has done something else entirely withThe Journeyand it caught nearly everybody off guard.
A trailer for theRidley ScottshortThe Journeydebuted during theSuper Bowlwith the full six-minute version popping up online shortly thereafter. As for the goal of the short film/commercial, it’s to promote Turkish Airline’s new airport in Istanbul. Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049) stars in the lengthy commercial. As for why Scott took theSuper Bowlcommercial on, he had this to say.
“I decided to go back and click-into advertising because I love the chase and the speed of the job. The fact is that this project went beyond the limitations of traditional advertising, and allowed me the creative freedom to tell the story.”
Ridley Scott is best-known for theAlienandBlade Runnerfranchises, but this isn’t the first time that he has ventured into theSuper Bowlcommercial realm. He previously directed the now-iconicApplecommercial for the big game in 2007, which was seen as an odd choice at the time. With that being said, there are more than a few people who were thrown off by the commercial and Scott’s involvement. But, the director seems to enjoy the freedom that he is allowed when crafting a big commercial.
Ridley Scott was last behind the camera for 2017’s All the Money in the World. The director made the decision to take actor Kevin Spacey out of the movie after his allegations of sexual misconduct became public. He replaced the disgraced actor with veteran Christopher Plummer. The director is attached to helmQueen and Countryalong with the highly anticipatedGladiator 2. There have even been some rumors about the director heading back to theAlienfranchise, which would make a lot of people very happy. For now, Scott is happy with the work that he has done with Turkish Airlines.
The Journeyis a well-put together short film, which is evident even from the 30-second trailer. It has a much different look from just about anything else that we’ve seen during theSuper Bowland that even goes for the totally bonkersGame of ThronesandBud Light commercialthat featured the Mountain and one of the dragons breathing fire all over everybody. While it costs a pretty penny to release aSuper Bowlspot, the commercials have all been getting better and better each year as the price goes up per 30-second spot.
