Everyone knows that it’s hard to make friends when you’re an adult, but oneA24movie takes things to the extreme to deliverone of the best comedies in recent memory. Now, nearly four months since its theatrical debut, we finally know whenFriendshipwill make its streaming debut, and you don’t have long to wait to watch what critics call “an amusing descent into madness and a weirdly moving portrait of one man’s doomed search for connection.”
Warner Bros. Discovery announced today thatFriendshipwill begin streaming onHBO Maxon Friday, July 13, 2025. Written and directed by Andrew DeYoung, the film stars Tim Robinson as Craig, a socially awkward marketing executive who obsessively yearns to be friends with his new neighbor Austin (Paul Rudd), a charismatic but unfulfilled weatherman. When his attempts to make an adult male friend go overboard, they threaten to ruin both of their lives.

Premiering at TIFF last year,Friendshiphit theaters on August 03, 2025, courtesy of A24, who picked up the film’s U.S. distribution rights following its success on the festival circuit. While it was only available for a limited time, it did manage to take in $16.6 million at the box office before heading to VOD a little over a month later.
Critics Call ‘Friendship’ “One of the Funniest Movies Ever Made”
While there have been a lot of great comedies over the decades, few have earned the distinction of being the best. There’s Something About Mary,Step Brothers, andAirplane!are some listed on IMDB’s Top 100 list, and based on what critics have to say, you can now countFriendshipamong them. Called"one of the funniest movies ever made"by MovieWeb’s own Sarah Lovett, she writes:
“I saw Friendship at the movie theater at 1 pm on a Tuesday with an audience of roughly nine others. Despite our low numbers, we created a resounding and consistent wall of laughter for the movie’s runtime. In fact, I would estimate that we were all laughing approximately every three seconds. Can we just take a second to acknowledge how special and rare that is? I watch a lot of movies. I watch a lot of comedies. I have genuinely racked my brain trying to think of another time I have laughed this hard and this consistently in the theater, and I cannot.”

However,Friendshipisn’t just a funny comedy. It actually has something to say about male loneliness and emotional maturity, while at the same time providing a scathing look at consumer culture and identity. As critic Jack Martin from Film Feeder puts it:
“Watching this guy go to such drastic measures in order to feel a sense of satisfaction in his life, even at the expense of the trust and companionship of his own family, makes for moments where any belly-laugh comes with an extra side of awkwardness.”

Needless to say,Friendshipis not only funny, but it’s pretty relatable to any adult who’s struggled to make friends as they get older, even if it gets a little cringe at times. It’s definitely one to add to your watch list, and be sure to check it out when it makes its streaming debut on HBO Max on Sept. 5.
