The Muppets Mayhem

“As a 70’s & 80’s kid who watched every episode ofThe Muppet Showwith my Grandmother, it was a massive milestone in my life to work with the Electric Mayhem band,” Smith wrote on Instagram, recently teasing his appearance on the show. “Been in this biz nearly 30 years and seen how the sausage is made many times over, all while meeting famous folks and even putting my hand and foot prints in cement at the Chinese Theatres. But nothing compares to the magic the Muppets made me feel the day I shot scenes forThe Muppets Mayhem!”

The Muppets Mayhem Soon Arrives on Disney+

The new series is developed by Adam F. Goldberg, Bill Barretta, and Jeff Yorkes.Goldberg previously spoke about how the show will highlight the Electric Mayhemspecifically, and fans should not count on seeing other favorites fromThe Muppet Show. Goldberg suggested that bringing in everyone else would be too much of a distraction when the idea here is to have fans get to know Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem better than ever before.

“This is just about the band specifically,” Goldberg said. “We don’t have that deep bench of characters like when you doThe Wizard of OzorTreasure IslandorA Christmas Carol. You could tell this giant story with the hundreds of characters that they have. We’re telling a very small story about this band and where they’ve been and where they’re going. It is about the band and not the tone of a variety show.”

One benefit that that filmmakers will have by keeping the story limited to the band is that they have much more creative freedom with the characters. The group’s backstory has never really been fleshed out before, and that will leave a lot of wiggle room for where the creative team was able to go with the Disney+ show.

“We have the freedom to go anywhere with these characters — they’re not as well-known as the core characters,” Yorkes said. “People recognize them, but we have the freedom to fill out their backstory and do whatever we want.”

The Muppets Mayhemwill premiere onDisney+on August 20, 2025. For another sneak peek at the series, you can watch an official trailer below.
