The CW is developing a new TV series based on the 2004 romance classicThe Notebook, which catapultedRyan GoslingandRachel McAdamsto stardom. The original movie, based on theNicholas Sparksnovel, earned $115 million worldwide from just a $29 million production budget. “This series will follow the romantic journey of the two beloved central characters Noah and Allie, at the outset of their blossoming relationship as they build their lives and their future together against the backdrop of theracial politics, economic inequities, and social mores of post-World War II of the late 1940s in North Carolina.”
The original movie was also partially set in present day, with the older version of Noah (James Garner) telling his story to an Alzheimer’s-stricken Allie (Gena Rowlands), who can’t remember her past. The CW’s Mark Pedowitz revealed that this portion of the story won’t be featured inThe Notebookseries. Here’s what the network executive had to say.
“I don’t believe we’re going to see the older couple-what they become. But things change [in development]. I’m thrilledNick Sparkswanted to do it at The CW.”
The Notebookis aNicholas SparksProductions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Sparks will executive produce alongside Theresa Park. She has teamed up with the author on his last threetheatrical adaptations,The Best of Me,The Longest Rideand the upcomingThe Choice.Todd Graff(Joyful Noise) is writing the script and producing.
If the project gets aseries order, it will be The CW’s secondperiod drama, followingReign. It will also mark the first TV series based on aNicholas Sparksnovel, but the author did produce a Lifetime TV movie adaptation of his novel Deliverance Creek last year.
