This weekend’sNetflixTUDUM event revealed all manner of material surrounding upcoming releases, with a set video offering our first look at the highly anticipated sequel,The Old Guard 2. Revealed on social media via Twitter user@CostaRue, the footage provides a backstage look at the comic book movie follow-up, as well as confirmation of the cast. The clip begins with returning starCharlize Theronrevealing that filming on the sequel is currently underway in Rome, with the actress saying, “We know how much you loved the first film and we’ve been putting in the work to verify this new film is even better.”
Her fellow returning co-starChiwetel Ejioforthen chimes in, confirming that the entire cast from the firstThe Old Guardwill be back for the follow-up (those who survived, of course), meaning thatThe Old Guard 2will once again feature Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts and Veronica Ngô.
Ejiofor then goes on to confirm thatThe Old Guard 2will add a couple of A-list facesin the form ofKill Billstar Uma Thurman andSnake Eyes: G.I. Joe Originsstar Henry Golding.
Finally, KiKi Layne teases the scale and scope of the action movie sequel. “New locations, even more action, and incredible stunts. So many surprises you’ll never see coming.”
Based on the graphic novel by writer Greg Rucka,The Old Guardwas released on Netflix in 2020 and follows a group of mercenaries led by Charlize Theron. But there is something unusual about this group of mercenaries, they are all centuries-old immortals with the ability to heal themselves. After being betrayed, the group of unkillable killers embarks on a bloody and brutal revenge mission.
The Old Guard 2Will Find Andy Struggling with Her Newfound Mortality
The firstThe Old Guardis just one of several franchise-starters for Netflix, and proved to be a huge hit when it hit the streaming platform. The movie received generally positive reviews from critics, and quickly became one of the top 10 most-successful original launches in Netflix history.
Plot details forThe Old Guard 2are currently being kept under wraps, though Charlize Theron has revealed that the sequelwill find her character, Andy AKA Andromache of Scythia, struggling with her newfound mortalityand “once again warring over the things that she cannot change in her life.”
Of course,The Old Guardfranchise is based on a comic book series, allowing us to garner clues for the sequel courtesy of the source material. “When you’ve waged war as long as Andy and her squad, you’ve gotten your hands more than bloody,” the official synopsis forThe Old Guard Book Two: Force Multipliedreads. “Now, the day has come to confront the sins of the past. But as Nile struggles to make peace with the team, the last person Andy expected to ever see again returns to challenge not only what Andy believes in, but what the team is willing to fight for.”
The Old Guard 2has not yet been given a release date.
