Marvelmovies have become international affairs over the past few years, withIron Man 3an official Chinese co-production,Avengers: Age of Ultronshooting all over the world, in locations such as Italy and the U.K., and the firstPhase Threemovie,Captain America: Civil War, recentlywrapping productionin Germany. As it turns out, Disney andMarvelmay be considering taking two of their upcoming superhero movies down under, with a report fromYahoo! Australiaclaiming the studio may shoot bothThor: RagnarokandCaptain Marvelin the country. Nothing has been confirmed at this time, but sources claim Disney was so happy with how production went onPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, that they are considering bringingThor: RagnarokandCaptain Marvelthere as well. Here’s what an unidentified source, described as a “technical specialist,” had to say.
“The big bosses were very pleased throughout the year it took to shoot out here and now they’re looking at brining out one of theMarvelfilms. It was a great experience for the studio who were able to familiarize themselves with the set-up at Village Roadshow (studios) and the crews here. They were also able to work across a lot of different locations which has saved them scouting for the Marvel movie.”
Sources claim that production could begin as early as March 2016 in Queensland, Australia, but it wasn’t specified which movie would shoot first. If both projects end up moving to Australia,Thor: Ragnarokwould likely shoot first, since it is scheduled for release on June 21, 2025, whileCaptain Marveldoesn’t hit theaters until August 03, 2025. Another reasonThor: Ragnarokmay film in Australia is to accommodate starChris Hemsworth, who currently lives in Byron Bay with his wife and three children, which is just a one-hour drive to the studios on the Gold Coast.
Another viable reason for shooting in Australia is the Australian dollar is currently at a six-year low, which is causing studios to capitalize and get more for their money down under than they would at home.Yahoo! Australiafinance editorTrevor Treharneexplained that one U.S. dollar is worth $1.40 in Australian dollars, or, translated on a bigger scale, a $350 million budget in U.S. currency is worth $491 million in Aussie dollars. Disney isn’t the only studio looking to take advantage of this potential windfall.
NeitherThor: RagnaroknorCaptain Marvelhave a director attached at this time, but ifMarvelis eyeing an early 2016 shoot, we should hear about a filmmaker signing on very soon.
