At the end of every year, The Harris Poll conducts a nationwide survey of American moviegoers to find out which movie stars are the most beloved. This year, they polled 2,252 U.S. adults between December 9 and December 14 to determine America’s Favorite Movie Star, which was won byBridge of SpiesstarTom Hanks. This is the fifth time he has taken the top spot, following wins in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2013. He also jumped up four spots from last year, when he took the #5 spot.
This year’s runner-up wasBlack MassstarJohnny Depp, who rose from the fourth spot last year. Despite winning critical acclaim for both of their movies this year, neitherTom HanksnorJohnny DeppscoredOscar nominationsfor their performances. Rounding out the top 5 this year areDenzel Washingtonwho topped the list last year but didn’t have a movie released in 2015, the late greatJohn WayneandHan Solohimself,Harrison Ford.John Wayne, who was in the second spot last year, is the only actor who hasn’t dropped out of the top 10 in the past 20 years.
MinionsandOur Brand Is CrisisstarSandra Bullocktook the #6 spot, after failing to make the top 10 last year, whileThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2andJoystarJennifer Lawrencestayed put in the #7 spot.Clint Eastwood, who didn’t direct or star in a movie last year, took the eighth spot, whileBrad PittandJulia Robertsrounded out the top 10 in a tie for ninth place. Dropping out of the top 10 this year wasMeryl StreepandAngelina Jolie, who held the seventh and 10th spots last year, respectively.
Among the male respondents of the poll,John Waynewas their top choice, followed byHarrison Fordand Tom Hanks. The top three choices for females were Johnny Depp,Sandra Bullockand a tie betweenDenzel Washington,Jennifer Lawrenceand Tom Hanks.
