Striking with preemptive speed, TriStar Pictures has acquired the worldwide rights toDanny Boyle’s much-anticipated sequel toTrainspotting. The currently untitled film, based on characters created by Irvine Welsh, reunites directorDanny Boylewith screenwriterJohn Hodgeand all of the principal cast of the 1996 film.Ewan McGregor,Jonny Lee Miller,Ewen Bremnerand RobertRobert Carlylewill reprise the iconic roles ofRenton, Sick Boy,Spudand Begbie.
Producers are Andrew Macdonald, Danny Boyle, Christian Colson, and Bernie Bellew through Figment Films, Decibel Films, and Cloud Eight Films. Film4 is also a production entity. Shooting onTrainspotting 2will begin in late spring 2016. The film will be released in 2017 to mark the 21st birthday of the original film. Danny Boyle had this to say.
“It’s been 20 years since we met these characters and John Hodge’s screenplay brilliantly explores what’s happened to them-and to us-in the intervening years. We are grateful to Tom and Hannah for their support and we can’t wait to get going.”
Hannah Minghella has this to say.
“Trainspotting was a seminal movie for me. Like almost everyone my age, I had the ‘Choose Life’ poster on my university dorm room wall. I have wanted to work with Danny ever since, so the opportunity to collaborate on the sequel is truly a dream come true. It perfectly represents the filmmaker-driven movies I am committed to making at TriStar.”
The sequel was originally set to be calledPorno, based on author Irvine Welsh’s 2002 sequel novel of the same name, but the director confirmed that his follow-up won’t actually be titledPorno. The filmmaker wouldn’t confirm the official title yet, but he did joke about borrowing the title from another well-knownsequel. Here’s what he had to say about the potential title.
“No, we’re going to try and call it T2 but there might be some issues there withJames Cameron. I’ll have to beg and we’ll have to go toJames Cameronand say ‘What do you think?'”
While it will not be calledPorno, the story will still be adapted from the sequel novel. The story finds the four main characters who cross paths together in the pornography industry. It isn’t known how long principal photography will last, but if the director plans on releasing the sequel by the end of 2016, to capitalize onTrainspotting, it may be a rushed production and post-production process.
