Michael Bayis currently working on his fifth installment in the live-actionTransformersfranchise, and there are lots more to come after that. Even though the movies continue to make money at the box office, for a great many fans, these new sequels do not represent what they want out of theTransformerssaga. For a lot of people, the best entry ever made featuring Optimus Prime and the gang wasTransformers: The Movie, the animated version which came out in 1986. Lucky for us, a brand new, 4k release is on the way.
Shout! Factoryand Hasbro have just released a new trailer, which is up on YouTube, showcasing the restoration of the movie for theTransformers 30th anniversary release. The trailer is definitely on the cheesy side of things, but all of the footage fromTransformers: The Movielooks absolutely fantastic, and the special features seem well worth it for fans as well. The special features include a director’s commentary fromNelson Shin, new featurettes and storyboards from the making of the movie. Plus, there will be a brand new behind-the-scenes documentary called “Til All Are One.”
Transformers: The Moviebarely made a dent in the box office when it was released in 1986, pulling in less than $6 million worldwide during its original run. The movie went on to find an audience later though, having become abeloved classicin the time since. The movie had an incredible cast, featuringPeter Cullen, the current voice of Optimus Prime,Eric Idle,Casey Kasem,Judd Nelson, the late, greatLeonard Nimoy,Frank Welker, and in his last performance ever,Orson Welles.
The plot ofTransformersfeaturesOptimus Primeand the Autobots in a battle to take back their home planet from Megatron and the Decepticons. However, unbenounced to both sides is that an even more threatening evil is on the way in the form of the planet destroying force of evil, Unicron. TheAutobotsthen have to turn their attention to stopping Unicron, in order to save their planet from obliteration. In trueTransformersfashion, critics didn’t love the movie, as it currently has a 55 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But fans love it, and it has been looked upon more favorably as time has went on.
The trailer is slightly misleading, as it says that the movie is available now. What would be more accurate is to say that the 30th anniversary edition ofTransformers: The Movieis available for pre-order now, and will be available in the U.S. on September 13.
