Amy Schumer(Girls, Bros, Trainwreck) is back with a new movie, resuming her Netflix relationship despite their disagreements eight years ago when she wanted more than $11 million for a stand-up special. The trailer forKinda Pregnanthas been out for a week but has just 55 thousand views (and 1.7 thousand likes) as of Aug 17, 2025. That’s compared to the more successful trailers for relatively little-known upcoming Netflix titles, likeDon’t Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever(509 thousand views),Cassandra(138 thousand views),BandidosSeason 2 (208 thousand views), and one of several trailers forSakamoto Days(3 million views in three days).
Perhaps this has to do with the lengthy history of negativity towards Schumer, for various reasons. She has certainly had a contentious relationship with her audience (who she refuses to be photographed with in most instances), frequently fueled by social media, that great catalyst of catastrophe.

The comments on the trailer forKinda Pregnantindicate the existing presuppositions that audiences have of Schumer. YouTuber @claires1980 writes, “It’s a crime Netflix throws money at stuff like this, but cancelled 1899 and The OA.” @Slaughter237 commented, “Is it too late to replace Amy Schumer with another actress?” Meanwhile, @fredbatchelder writes, “A movie about her lying for attention and unable to cope. Yeah, sounds spot on.” What exactly do they mean about “lying for attention?” Well, part of it has to do with the frequent charges of plagiarism brought against Schumer.
Like Amy Schumer’s Jokes, ‘Kinda Pregnant’ Feels Familiar (Or Allegedly Plagiarized)
As the above video compilation meticulously displays, many of the jokes that Schumer has written or included in her media are more than just suspiciously similar to those of other comedians — they’re practically identical. Even if she does lift material from other comics, it doesn’t seem to help her. For instance,The Leather Special(the one with a woefully low payout of $11 million) is considered one of the worst comedy specials in recent memory. In fact, most people believe that Amy Schumer is the reason Netflix scrapped its star rating system, a result of the abominable reviews for her comedy special.

For this and other reasons, Amy Schumer was listed as one of thefive “most hated” comediansof all time, alongside Dane Cook, Brendan Schaub, Carlos Mencia, and Joe Rogan. And it doesn’t seem the accusations of plagiarism should stop at Schumer’s stand-up comedy. The plot synopsis forKinda Pregnantreads, “Jealous of her best friend’s pregnancy, Lainy wears a fake baby bump…and accidentally meets the man of her dreams.” This kind of stale rom-com logline feels less and less realistic for her each year (similar to Schumer’s earlier movie,I Feel Pretty, or her showLife & Beth), as Schumer grows increasingly hideous on the inside. It also feels like a retread of similar movies. Just check out the plot synopsis ofPreggoland, fromMongrel Media:
“When 35-year-old Ruth ruins a baby shower with her juvenile antics, her old high school cronies-who are all mothers now-promptly de-friend her. But when she is later mistakenly thought to be ‘with child’ she is inexplicably welcomed back into the group. Although she initially tries to come clean, the many perks of pregnancy are far too seductive to ignore. Preggoland is a comedy about our societal obsession with babies and the lengths we’ll go to be part of a club.”

Or how aboutLabor Pains, a 2009 movie with Lindsay Lohan from First Look Studios: “Thea is on the brink of being fired. To keep her job, she makes a desperate claim: She’s pregnant! Her employer fears a lawsuit and lets Thea keep her job. Now, she has to keep up the lie to keep her job and her new man.”
15 Best Women-Led Comedies, Ranked
In honor of Women’s History Month, here’s a list dedicated to the funniest women-led movies.
It’s all a little sus, as the kids say. Don’t get us wrong, Schumer was very funny in the classic Adult Swim seriesDelocated, though perhaps she wasn’t acting too much, considering the overdramatic, obnoxious character she plays. Nonetheless, it must be said that the TV seriesInside Amy Schumerwas excellent. The episode-length parody of12 Angry Menis one of the greatest episodes of television ever made. And yet… while Schumer is credited as a writer on most episodes, the head writer is the very funny and thoughtful Jessi Klein. Who else is credited as a writer? Well:
Co-creator Daniel Powell, Kyle Dunnigan, Kurt Metzger, Christine Nangle, Tami Sagher, Kim Caramele, Jeremy Beiler, Jon Glaser, Gabe Liedman, Tig Notaro, Emily Altman, Neil Casey, Hallie Cantor, Mike Lawrence, Claudia O’Doherty, Georgie Aldaco, Ron Weiner, Tova Diker, Derek Gaines, Tim Meadows, Jaye McBride, Brandon Pierce, Yamaneika Saunders, Joe Strazzullo, Bridget Everett, Sydnee Washington, and more. So, at the very least, Schumer hardly deserves the majority of credit forInside Amy Schumer, or is perhaps its performative mascot.

Supporting War & Clashing with MLK’s Daughter
Schumer has also been criticized for her aggressively vocal support for Israel and its increasingly destructive attacks on Palestinians (and Iranians, and Yemenis, and Lebanese people). Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, Human Rights Watch, and many other agencies, groups, and governments have referred to Israel’s approach towards Palestinians as “genocide.” Schumer, on the other hand, continues to support (and conflate herself with) Israel while stereotyping and insulting anyone who pushes back against that government’s actions. Emma Vigeland ofThe Majority Reportsummed Schumer’s attitude up well:
“This is an example of a very privileged person victimizing themselves and centering their own fears as a mass murder.”
Schumer even got into it with the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. after the comedian posted a video of the civil rights icon supporting Israel. The activist’s daughter, Bernice King, was quick to point out on Twitter (currently known as X), “He also believed militarism (along with racism and poverty) to be among the interconnected Triple Evils. I am certain he would call for Israel’s bombing of Palestinians to cease, for hostages to be released and for us to work for true peace, which includes justice.” See that post below (Schumer has since deleted her X account):
So it’s no wonder that, after Schumer’s remarks, some are boycotting her new Netflix movie,Kinda Pregnant. AsThe New Arabwrites, “Scores of activists and social media users online have called for the boycott of a new film starring Amy Schumer, citing past comments by the comedian and actor on the war in Gaza.” Her rhetoric has become dehumanizing in some instances, with one notorious social media post putting Gazans in an atrocious light. See that below.
Schumer has pushed back against a ceasefire and mocked the ideaon social media, and has been combative, insulting, and, according to some, racist toward anyone who disagrees with her opinions. In one infamous instance, Schumer targeted an actor who mentioned Schumer but never even tagged her. “Did something I post about my people being massacred upset you?” wrote Schumer in a passive-aggressive manifesto of self-victimization. “You are not educated about the history of the Jewish people and of the conflict […] you are antisemitic. One day when you realise how you acted in this moment I will accept your apology.” Find that below.
The Professional Victim
Of course, Schumer tends to incorporate the negativity toward her into her image as a victim of misogyny and body-shaming. This way, when people think she’s not just unfunny but an actual joke thief and a vehement supporter of genocide, she can blame the patriarchy. As she said in an interview with Variety, “People get really mad at women. They save a special kind of vitriol for us. It’s not new. I think it’s because they fear women. That’s my guess.” In one of the most surprisingly self-aware and reasonable Reddit threads in existence, a group of people in r/AskFeminists discuss whether Schumer is unfunny and bad, or if they’re just sexist. Check that out below:
At the end of the day, though, Schumer comes from a wealthy and powerful family and is related to Chuck Schumer, the leader of the Democrats in the Senate for the past eight years. As such, she often pivots to her politics to explain why people dislike her work and her personality. When The Leather Special was released and bombed with audiences, she blamed conservatives (why they would watch an Amy Schumer special to begin with is a mystery).

AsThe Washington Examinerreported, “Schumer took to Instagram and blamed “alt-right trolls” for converging onto Netflix and giving her horrible reviews:
“‘I am so proud of my special and grateful to all the people spreading love on line about it […] I am the first female comic who is selling out arenas all over the world and so grateful for that. I am embarrassed for the ‘journalists’ who report on trolls activities as if it’s news.'”
With her humor dead for a decade and the uproar dying down, Schumer is now just one of many forgettable, angry voices on social media. Many people are deciding to tune that kind of negativity out of their lives, which is possibly whyKinda Pregnanthasn’t caused much interest whatsoever, beyond some understandable boycotts.
