The date of August 17, 2025, will always be remembered as the day when Netflix finally broke the curse regarding their lineup of terribly unsuccessful manga and anime adaptations. With the live-action versions ofDeath NoteandCowboy Bebopnot being accepted by American audiences, the streaming giant seemed to, unfortunately, be on their last legs when producing anything worthwhile in this genre.

As more time passed leading up to the penultimate premiere ofOne Piece, it seemed like any new piece of information regarding this new series was being pushed to every media outlet out there in hopes of building momentum. From quote-filled interviews with stars of the show to set photos that teasingly showed the massive ship sets, the strategy of an ever-opening door into this highly anticipated fantasy world proved very worthwhile for everyone involved.

Harlock and creator Leiji Matsumoto

Even though there were noticeable changes from the manga, like having the Marines chase after Luffy and his crew almost immediately and Arlong being the first villain rather than Don Krieg, the live-action adaptation ofOne Piecebecame an overnight success. Both critics and general audiences praised the show immensely, noting the actor’s dedication to the roles and theall-around faithfulnessto the original work. With such a fantastical and heartfelt anime making phenomenal headway (in a new form) when so many others could not, there is a similar franchise out there that could also benefit from a modern-age spotlight in order to gain a new era of fans.

Not Out At Sea, But From Outer Space

Created by the late manga artist Leiji Matsumoto over thirty years ago in 1977, the noble and unshaken Space Pirate Captain Harlock and his rotating crew first protected Earth from giant-sized female Mayan legends who tried to reclaim the planet after allegedly being the first ones to discover it years ago.

With such an outlandish introduction, the tall and reserved rebel was then featured in eight different projects, includingan OVA adventurefrom 1982 where he had to fight an evil witch who made the earth literally disappear anda CG anime filmwhere he opposed a totalitarian government with a giant doomsday cannon at their disposal. Even though both of these stories are quite epic in nature, there is a special miniseries from this same character that would not only bode well for Netflix’s unique brand of storytelling but also serve as a test run for additional arcs from Harlock since this rendition is only six episodes long.

Featuring iconic characters from the overall lore, such as Harlock’s short but highly skilled best friend Tochiro Oyama and fellow female pirate Emeraldas,Harlock Sagabegins with the introduction of various female organ players – performers of time, who preserve the immortality of gods on Valhalla by playing their instruments.

When this endless tradition is suddenly threatened by someone who steals the specific metal that can destroy these very same deities, Harlock and his crew become involved when his part-time navigator, Meme, reveals that the robber that they are chasing is actually her brother.

As viewers become more entangled inthis intergalactic adventure, we learn that Meme’s entire race was once used as servants by the gods but was discarded like garbage when they didn’t obey rules. This resentment is fueling her brother’s actions.

With the same budget used forOne Piece, the intricacies of this high-stakesscience fiction soap operawould be more than enough to draw viewers in. But there is so much more here than meets the eye.

The Complexity of Characters in Harlock Saga

With Lord Wotan (the supreme king of Valhalla) not being able to fight back against this sudden invader because of his rapidly decreasing age, he hires twin alien-like brothers Fafner and Fasolt of the highly intelligent Risenheim clan to build an impenetrable fortress to protect himself and the other female musicians since they keep him young.

When these siblings demand intimate relations with one of the musically inclined women in exchange for a quicker turnout of the fortress,Harlock Sagasuddenly takes on a much more adult situation. While the anime glosses over the traumatizing moment, Netflix would turn this into a much more serious story. The ending provides a satisfying conclusion in which our heroes also win. There seem to be some mysterious evil forces re-emerging due to the heroic sacrifice that had to be made to save the universe.

Just asOne Piecehad more villains than you could count bythe end of the eighth episode,Harlock Sagahas character complexities you would never imagine. Even with his back against a wall, the ruler of Valhalla continues to treat people like objects, all for his own safety, and even the seemingly intellectual alien builders only have moral compasses after partaking in the most sinful of deeds. Not to mention the main antagonist shooting an eleven-year-old child for not wanting to craft the stolen metal into a ring.

Only time will tell if Netflix ever sets sights onHarlock Sagaas their next anime adaptation. Until then, all the space captain’s iconic adventures can be found across various streaming platforms like Prime Video and Crunchyroll.
