Since its premiere on Nov. 22,Wickedhas become a cultural phenomenon that has swept the nation, and broken a number of records along the way. Now it can add another achievement to its growing list of accolades, as the adaptation of the hit Broadway musical has managed to topple anMCUfavorite to enter the listas one of the 50 highest-grossing movies of all time at the domestic box office.
Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo,Wickedexplores the complex friendship between Elphaba and Galindabefore Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, and how they would go on to become the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good. Thanks to its pre-Christmas day haul of $3.2 million,Deadlinereports thatWickedhas now earned $392.4 million in North America, which is enough for it to take the #49 spot in the top 50 highest-grossing movies at the domestic box office, beating Tom Holland’s MCU hitSpider-Man: Far From Home, which now sits at the bottom of the list with $391.4 million. Should its upward trajectory continue,Wickedhas a chance of toppling the Disney hitFrozento take the #48 slot, but it has to earn more than $401 million to do so.

‘Wicked’ Was Almost a Very Different Movie…In the 1990s
Two significant industry figures were vying for the rights of Gregory Maguire’s novel in the 1990s.
That being said,Wickedis far from reaching the overall heights ofSpider-Man: Far From Homewhen it comes to its worldwide take at the box office. Thus far, Jon M. Chu’s musical has managed to earn a total of $580.9 million, while the 2019 MCU smash went on to earn $1.133 billion by the time it was all said and done. WillWickedmanage to at least match it by the time its initial theatrical run comes to a close? It’s not looking good at this point.

‘Wicked’ Still Has a Chance to Beat ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’
Don’t countWickedout just yet, though, because there’s still a chance it could come close to earning the same amount asSpider-Man: Far From Home, if not more. The one thing it has going for it is that it’s just the first part of the tale, which will continuenext November withWicked: For Good. As such, there’s a high probability that Universal Pictures could re-releaseWickedin theaters before the sequel drops, and if that happens, it will only serve to increase its overall box office take, which could put it on the same level as the MCU film.
Of course, all of that is speculation at this point. Still, one thing’s for sure: come awards season, we expectWickedto take home several trophies, as it’s already been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, a whopping 11 Critics’ Choice Awards, and eight Satellite Awards. All that’s left to hear now is how many Oscars it will be nominated for when they’re announced on Aug 19, 2025. In the meantime, check outWickedat a theater near you courtesy of Universal Pictures.
