A new trailer forThe X-Filesseason 11 finale has arrived online. TV revivals have been all the rage lately, but Fox has had by far one of the most successful revivals in recent memory by bringing back sci-fi favoriteThe X-Filesin 2016 for asix-episode run. That run of episodes was successful enough to convince everyone to come back for one more season, but that run is coming to an end with the upcoming episode, which could very well be the series finale ofThe X-Files. At the very least, it’s the end of the show as we know it.
Fox released the trailer forThe X-Filesseason 11 finale ahead of its premiere tonight, which teases a tense, emotional and thrilling conclusion. The plot will revolve heavily around Scully and Mulder’s son, who has a lot of mystery surrounding him. While this trailer doesn’t reveal too much, it’s clear that there’s more going on here than meets the eye. What would anX-Filesfinale be, especially if it really is the series finale, if there weren’t some fun and surprising twists and turns?
Though Fox could still renewThe X-Files,Gillian Andersonhas made it clear that, no matter what, she’snot going to return as Dana Scullyfor another season. Creator Chris Carter initially indicated that he couldn’t see the show going on without her, but he’s since changed his tune. That’s not to say he’s definitely going to continue on without one of the show’s leads, but he seems to think there’s a version ofThe X-Filesthat could exist without Scully. Afterall, the series got along for a while before concluding its initial run withoutDavid Duchovny’s Mulder. Here’s what Carter had to say in a recent interview about the possible future of the series without Anderson.
“I think that certainly TheX-Files has more life in it, there are more stories to tell, with Gillian or without. I’m sorry to see her go, I’ve never actually considered doing this show without her, so is this the end? It’s the end of something, I don’t know if it’s the beginning of something new. But certainly we will have to all put our heads together and figure out where to go from here.”
The X-Filesoriginally debuted on Fox in 1993 and earned 16 Emmys over the course of its initial nine-season run. In total, the series has run for 217 episodes. The real question is, can this episode serve as a truly satisfying conclusion to the series, while at the same time leaving the door open for a potential season 12 that wouldn’t include Dana Scully? That’s a tall order, but we won’t have to wait long to figure out if Fox and Chris Carter were able to pull it off.
