X-Files: Where Does Mulder & Scully's Relationship Stand?

Warning, there areSPOILERSahead. Production is still under way in Vancouver on Fox’sUntitled X-Files Revival, and we’ve already seen a few snippets of footage in anX-Files trailerthat debuted last month.Gillian AndersonandDavid Duchovnyare reprising their roles as Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, but it’s already clear that these characters have changed quite a bit. The last time we saw these FBI agents was in the 2008 movieThe X-Files: I Want to Believe, where they were actually a romantic couple living in the same house together. As it turns out, that won’t be the case when the series debuts next year, with Fox debuting a scene at today’s TCA panel that offers some valuable insight into their relationship.

According to Zap2It, the scene opens withMulderarriving atScully’s house, which reveals right away that they are no longer living together or romantically involved. It isn’t known if fans will get any more insight into why they split up throughout the season, but when Mulder shows up, Scully says, “as your friend and as a physician, you’re on dangerous ground here.” This line alone makes it clear that Mulder and Scully are no longer an item.

This scene shows a frantic Mulder claiming that he has “figured it out,” even stating “The truth is out there,” the original tagline for the hit series during its initial run. Mulder claims that they’ve been “deceived” for years and he couldn’t tell her on the phone, “because it’s gonna sound crazy.” He goes on to insist that TV anchor Tad O’Malley, played byJoel McHale, is correct that it’s not an “alien conspiracy,” and he is going to broadcast the truth. Mulder then drops a bombshell, revealing that Sveta (Annet Mahendru), who is at his house, is a victim ofalien abduction, and that she is the “key to everything.”

While these characters may not be romantically involved at the start of the season, it’s certainly possible that they could get back together at the end of this 6-episode run, perhaps as a tease for another miniseries event. This event series is only six episodes long, butDavid Duchovnyrevealed that he would be open to returning for another season, provided it isn’t a full 20-episode run. That surely will depend on how many fans tune in when the show debuts this coming January, but given the buzz swirling around the show, it wouldn’t be surprising if Fox ordered another season.
