Zack Snyder’s Watchmen Was ‘Ahead of Its Time,’ According to Christopher Nolan

The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan wonders how Watchmen would have fared in a post-Avengers world.

Sackhoff talked about her role in the animated film and bringing a new vulnerability to Laurie Juspeczyk. She compares the character to the likes of Poison Ivy inBatman: The Long Halloween, calling her “misunderstood,” and elaborates that it’s important to her that she brings these feelings, of anger and pain, to her performance. She found it to be one of the connecting lines between her and the character. She said:

“Laurie, I think, has a lot of self-doubt, a lot of vulnerability, a lot of pain. I think that that was something that I really wanted to sort of hold on to for her, and make that her through line. I have been in a situation where I loved somebody with all my heart and didn’t feel like I was enough, and that’s an awful feeling. It’s a terrible, terrible feeling. And, and so I held on to that, that was my thing with her. That was the thing that I kept coming home to. And I think that you hear it in her voice a lot.

Sackhoff has previous experience in voice acting, playing the role of Bo-Katan KryzeinStar Wars: The Clone Warsandreprising her role inStar Wars: Rebels,as well as the live action version of her character in thehit Disney+ series,The Mandalorian.

How Will the New Watchmen Adaptation Fare Against Zack Snyder’s?

DC Comics’Watchmenis one of the most critically acclaimed graphic novels of all time. Written in 1986-87 by Alan Moore with art by Dave Gibbons, two previous adaptations ofWatchmeninclude Snyder’s acclaimed filmWatchmen(2009) andthe HBO seriesof the same name from 2019, set 34 years after the events of the comics, both of which were met with much praise. The new film, styled in R-rated animation, takes another shot at adapting the comic and takes place in a world in which costumed superheroes have been outlawed. Audiences, though, have been divided over the latest take, and wonderif the series should be left alone.

The trailer was released in Julyto mixed reviews from fans. Joining Sackhoff, the all-star voice cast includes Titus Welliver as Rorschach, Matthew Rhys as Nite Owl, Michael Cerveris as Doctor Manhattan, and Troy Baker as Ozymandias. Other characters will be voiced by Jeffrey Combs, Kelly Hu, Adrienne Barbeau, Corey Burton, and Phil LaMarr, respectively.

Directed by Brandon Vietti and adapted from a script written by J. Michael Straczynski, the all-new animated film is being released by Warner Bros and Paramount. Straczynski echoed Sackhoff’s sentiments, revealing onsocial mediathat he “saw no need to write more material or change what works in the book. It’s pure Moore”, and hinting that this may be the most comic-accurate adaptation yet.

“I can now talk about it as the news is breaking. I adapted WATCHMEN for Warners animation. By “adapted” I mean strictly configuring the structure to work in a movie. I saw no need to write more material or change what works in the book. It’s pure Moore.”
